SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The iconic sails symbol of one of Arizona’s newest high-tech centers is largely complete, and it gives a new look to a once-tired commercial corner in southern Scottsdale.

The soaring white sails are the architectural symbol of SkySong, the ASU Scottsdale Innovation Center at the southeast corner of McDowell and Scottsdale roads. The 37-acre corner once was home to Los Arcos Mall, which was demolished to make way for the innovative development.

The white, Teflon-coated fabric was installed by FabriTec Structures of Costa Mesa, Calif. Work on the shade structure began in early December. Most of the work was complete by early February.

The next phase of work includes adding landscaping and benches under the shade structure. Workers also will install a lighting system to illuminate the shades at night. For special events, colored lights will be used.

The large pieces of Teflon-coated fabric, totaling 50,000 square feet, or more than one acre, are held up on thick steel cables stretched between several steel poles.

Co-developers SkySong are Higgins Development Partners in Chicago; The Plaza Companies in Peoria; USAA Real Estate Co.; and the ASU Foundation. The developers have hired Lee & Associates to oversee leasing of the buildings. Craig Coppola, Mark Seale, Chris Krewson and Andrew Cheney at Lee & Associates are SkySong’s marketing team.
