This year’s holiday season holds a little more sparkle for Sharon Harper, chief executive at The Plaza Companies in Peoria.

Just before Thanksgiving, the Boy Scouts of America’s Grand Canyon Council gave Harper the 2008 Building New Futures Good Scout Award. According to the Grand Canyon Council, previous recipients include Ross Farnsworth, chairman of Farnsworth Cos. in Mesa; John Ogden, past president of SunCor Development Co. in Tempe; John Graham, president of Sunbelt Holdings in Scottsdale; and Tom Lewis, founder, owner and chief executive of T.W. Lewis Co. in Tempe.

More recently, Harper’s company received a special honor for its upscale continuing care community near Tucson. Splendido at Rancho Vistoso was recognized with the National Active Retirement Association’s Gold Award for Best Overall Active Adult/Retirement Community. The development also received a Gold Award for Best Large Active Adult/Retirement Community and a Silver Award for Best Continuing Care Retirement Community. The honors were unveiled at the annual NARA Business Summit in November in Myrtle Beach. S.C.

Splendido at Rancho Vistoso opened in 2006. It is a joint venture of The Plaza Cos. and Mather LifeWays, a not-for-profit organization based in Evanston, Ill. The community offers upscale resort-style living for adults 55 and older. In 2008, the community opened the Sonora Health Center, which is open to the public.

Nominated projects had to meet the demand of active mature adults by setting basic project parameters for each qualified market, such as market demand, aging in place design, budgets and services.
